I feel like I should take my 1969 Chrysler Newport on a 9 hour drive to Newport, Rhode Island as a sort of pilgrimage. This would be in the summer of course. I could make a video about the adventure and document how many thousands of gallons this thing burns.

People love this car. I love it too but man, no car has ever garnered so much love as this old Chrysler.

My aunt and uncle have an apartment out there, beautiful place. The harbor is nearly as insane as Monaco. Last time we were there, they were bringing Chevy Chase's boat off the water into dry dock.

Let me know when you are going! It's not a Newport but my LeSabre is from the same era. We can see whose is bigger ;)

It's amazing what kind of memories the old cars trigger in people. I was at a show on Fanuiel Hall in Boston with my '54 MG and all day long older people were coming by with "That car is the same age as me" or "We used to have one of these" or "I need to take a picture of this car for my mom/dad" and it just never stopped. I let everyone tell their stories. I let anyone sit in the car who wanted to, even kids (with protection of course). Everybody is thrilled when something so notable is there. Your Newport fits that bill - a very noteable car that a lot of people shared memories in.

Sounds like a plan, get some photos of it in front of houses that are actually scaled to match the car.

Absolutely do it. Newport is a great town. Head to the Brick Alley Pub for lunch, then park your mansion-sized car in front of the mansions down on the Ocean Drive. Just make sure you're not coming here on one of the MANY parade days.

Can I get a bit more info on your car? What do you have for a transmission and what is the axle gear ratio?
I'm just trying to see if it's just my car that is ridiculously high geared 2.47:1 axle with a 1:1 final drive in the tranny. With 28.5" tall tires it only revs like 1800rpm @ 110 km/h. I'd expect that type of RPM with an overdrive but not with a 3spd?

Do it!
And let us know when you are. I live about an hour from Newport, we could do an Oppo giant vehicles in a cramped town meetup.

mine is a 383 V8 backed by a torqflite transmission. It has a 3.23 rear end I believe. Mine was made in the 60's when they didn't give a rats ass about fuel mileage. Yours was made when mileage was a concern so they geared it very low to increase highway mpg. I don't have a rich but I'm guessing my engine turns about 2,700 at highway speeds.

Perfect that's exactly what I was hoping to hear. I'm gonna do a ring & pinion swap and put 3.25:1 gears and get a bit more pickup out of this thing. I took it out for it's first real drive on saturday and it is SLOW . The difference in between 1/4 throttle and full throttle is basically non existent, you stomp on it and nothing happens. I alway knew these cars were slow but this is beyond slow.
I tried to look it up but what HP did that 383 put out back in the day?
